Calling all windsurfers old and young. The Sea Panther World Championships
are reconvening after some 18 years off the water! For those of you not old
enough to remember the Sea Panther it was, at one time Britains most
popular windsurfing board. And now it’s time to dust off all those old
boards, polish your dagger boards, fix your 2.70m booms (seriously) and
tidy up your back garden!!!
All comers are welcome (any board) and the weekend is totally about fun –
fun with old kit and fun with new kit. Whether you’re young or old then the
Sea Panther class has a great welcome for you.
The event itself is taking place at the Weymouth and Portland Sailing
Academy over the weekend of the 14/15 of September. Bunk house beds are
available at the centre itself (£15) or you can park your camper or caravan
on site for £2.50 per night (no tents sorry). Race entry includes a disco
and BBQ and, of corse your sailing ticket. Costs are £20 for Adults for
those wishing to sail and £10 for non sailing party goers! Under 16’s
Don Sutherland will be the master or ceremonies on the water and the
skippers meeting is at 11.00am on the Saturday. There are going to be many
names from the world of windsurfing in attendance – most of them now with
their kids!!! And on that note there will be a Pantherettes race for juniors.
The evening festivities will probably start sooner than planned if the
original Sea Panther parties are anything to go by..and if Rose Bailey is
coming (which she is) then anything could happen. A lively disco, some off
the cuff music, some stupid pranks and a few beers will see the evening
disappear to blurr into a dawn hangover..for sure….
Don’t forget – whilst the original Sea Panther was a one design class it’s
unlikely that you have one – so don’t fret. Turn up anyway and have some
fun. If you do have an old board – the older the better – then bring it
along. And if you don’t have an old board then come and see what
windsurfers had to put up with!!
