An Interview With UMI Bonaire Editing Competition Winner – Marc Broersma

We caught up with UMI Bonaire editing competition winner, Marc Broersma about how he makes windsurfing kit vanish and much more. First check out the incredible edit below, then the interview and finally leave your comments below that…

Boards: Firstly Marc where is home for you and what are you currently doing?
MB: Home is Enschede, in the East of the Netherlands. I’m studying Mechanical Engineering at the University of Twente.

Boards: Congratulations for winning the UMI Bonaire editing competition, you must be pretty happy to be heading to Bonaire, can you tell us a little about your inspiration behind the video?
MB: Thank you! I’m pretty excited to go to Bonaire indeed! My inspiration for the video came while I was scrolling through the raw footage and noticed that reversing the crashes looked pretty cool. So I thought it would be nice to let the riders crash first, rewind it, and let them stick the move with an as smooth as possible transition. I knew I needed some original effects in my movie to make it a bit different than the usual windsurf video, so I decided to add the 3D kono from Tonky in it as well.

Boards: So how much time did you spend on it and what sort of editing software did you use?
MB: Hard to say how much time went into it, but the intro and the effects took quite some time. The last week before the deadline I was working on it full time. I used Adobe Premiere, After Effects for general editing and effects, and Cinema4D for the 3D stuff.

Boards: Can you link us in with any other videos you’ve created online?
MB: Actually, this is my first windsurfing video, but I have made some short funny videos with a friend of mine. Some can be seen on YouTube.

Boards: Where does your editing background come from?
MB: My editing background comes purely from hobby. While creating short movies with effects, and searching how a particular effect can be done, you learn a lot about the software and it gives a feel for editing. It’s always nice when a piece of the edit just works.

Boards: Have you ever considered making a full length windsurfing production movie, similar to Andre Paskowski’s productions or The Windsurfing Movies?
MB: That would be pretty nice! But I’ve never really considered it, since making a full length movie requires a lot of time and especially a lot of cool shots. I’m a member of a student windsurf club, and we recently bought a nice GoPro camera and other cool video tools, so maybe I’ll be making some movies in the future!

Boards: What’s your favourite online action videos?
MB: I enjoyed Polakow’s Hollywood style movie ‘Jason Polakow windsurfing at Jaws – Podcast 1’, its very different than most windsurf videos and a really cool edit: You can check out this ridiculous edit by clicking here
I also like ‘Boujmaa King of Pain’ for Boujmaa’s jumps and attempts at new tricks, for instance the superman at 2:48. And one funny classic with a high absurdity level: Click here

Boards: Any pointers how to make the windsurfing kit invisible?
MB: To make the windsurfing kit invisible I made an image of the entire background the riders went by and aligned that image with the background in the shots. After that it was just neatly cutting out the gear and adding some fake white spray, because when the gear is cut out, so is the spray. Actually it was two separate raw shots from Taty and Kiri doing the bodydrag at approximately the same place and the pan back from Taty to Kiri is just the background image moving to the left. Luckily, in Taty’s shot, after he does the eslider, Kiri comes back sailing into the shot which worked out nicely for continuity.

Boards: What’s your own windsurfing level and what’s your favourite discipline to do and watch?
MB: Last year I learned how to loop and airjibe, and this year I’ll want to learn flakas and backloops. I’ll usually surf on flat to choppy conditions and try some freestyle, but last year I traveled to the sea more than previous years and really enjoyed the high jumping and wave riding. Freestyle and wave movies can both be very spectacular to watch, especially in waves with high jumps and radical stuff, but the radical stuff also applies to the freestyle movies. As for watching it and doing it myself, I don’t have a real preference for wave or freestyle, both are fun!

Boards: How important do you think video is these days for promoting both an individual and a brand?
MB: Well I’m no expert on this, but I think its pretty important, since for most people its very easy to watch a movie online. I frequently visit windsurf movie sites and by watching those videos I got to know a lot about the pros and what brands they’re using.

Boards: Should more brands support individual and team videos on top of what they already do for new product videos?
MB: If they benefit from it, they probably should. For example in the videos, seeing the pros doing amazing stuff on their gear, makes the choice of buying the same gear as them more likely. But as I’ve already mentioned, I’m no marketing guy.

Boards: When can people come and join you in Bonaire?
MB: Well, I have to see when it suits me best, probably end of July or begin August. But as Kiri says in the prize giving video (click here), I just have to check the forecasts and go when the wind is good :).

Boards: Finally thanks for the interview, any last comments?
MB: A thanks to UMI pictures for organizing this awesome competition, hopefully more promotions like this will follow! Thanks for the interest and great site by the way!
