So that’s that for 2007 – hardly a vintage year for windsurfing, but it certainly had its moments. Like the Cabo Verde PWA Wave contest back in February, arguably the greatest windsurfing event ever. Or that unseasonably windy spell in August that saw an amazing week of high-summer waveboard and small sail weather across the UK. Meanwhile Guy Cribb and co had blitzed downwind from Bournemouth to Brighton in a day, and Bryony Shaw took Gold in China at the Pre-Olympic RS:X Regatta in Quigdao, all set for an assault on the main prize at next year’s Games. The Fat Face Windsurfing Festival went from strength to strength in September, attracting hundreds of recreational racers despite a dearth of wind. An affliction that cursed the first ever PWA Tiree event too – they only just managed to scrape a result, although the island did charm the World Tour crew who will surely be back in ’08. No, it didn’t really blow last autumn, but the gales did finally show up as winter set in. Enough to create some of the biggest swells ever to batter the British Isles, and powering Martin Van Meurs over 50 knots on Southend’s Ray. And although that may well be it for British sailing until Christmas, we’ve got one more bite at the cherry – Christmas until New Year’s Day weather. Just keep the faith…
