BiC Nova 170D (2009)

BiC say: “On a Nova windsurfing is like child’s play! These boards have been developed specifically for learning to windsurf and progressing. With their comfortable volumes and wide deck area they’re great for making your first runs and starting to have fun from day one. The deck is covered in EVA foam for extra grip and comfort. They have a retractable daggerboard plus multiple footstrap positions, making them suitable for all levels of rider to enjoy strong wind conditions and start getting into funboard style sailing and gybing. Their relatively short length means they’re highly manoeuvrable, but still have great speed when the wind fills in and they start planing, giving you the excitement of full-on funboarding.”

Features: Full 5mm EVA soft deck, beginner and intermediate footstrap positions, integral carry handle on nose, fully retractable daggerboard, 40cm Powerbox fin.

Comment: The 170D is slightly shorter than the majority of improver boards on review here, but still sits within the 80-90cm range suggested by our gurus. This will make it less directional, reducing its suitability for light wind cruising but giving the rider more easily accessible performance to ‘grow into’ when the wind picks up. Also, being compact will make it easily manoeuvrable.
