BWA Rhosneigr – Day 1

Welcome to Day 1 of the first round of the BWA Wave Championships in Rhosneigr!  It’s not been a great year so far for wind, but it looks like luck might just be on our side for this one as the forecast is promising for later today and tomorrow.  Today (Friday) is pro’s only with the rest of the fleets competing over the weekend.

Pro riders are registered and currently rigging up as the wind steadily builds.  Waves are small, but there is some swell, so it’s actually looking quite hopeful for later on this afternoon.

14:20 – Kites are having a good time in the small waist high waves.  Some guys are planing on Freeride gear, but it’s not quite there for the wave gear yet.  Adam Lewis has rigged his 5.0m & 4.7m, so he’s expecting wind.  Next announcement 15:00.  We will keep you posted…

15:20 – Most of the sailors on the water warming up now, but only those on the biggest sails (5.5-6.0m) are planing… next announcement 16:00 for 16:30 start…

18:20….And at last, we are good to go!  First heat 18:30 with local boy Dave Horrocks vs Andy King

18:23…As the tide has pushed in, the angle has got better so we now have ok jumping conditions – 5.0-5.3’s and waist high waves.  Riding could be tricky…!  One jump two rides to count and 15 minute heats…

18:30….and we are off with Dave Horrocks vs Andy King!

18:50..Andy got off to a slow start, but pulled it back in the last 5 minutes with some clean back loops and 2 rides.  Conditions are super difficult for riding particularly and Dave struggled to get a wave worth riding through his heat despite some nice jumps.

18:50..Phil Horrocks vs Steve Thorpe next…

19:00…Horrocks looked to be taking that one with the best ride of the day so far (albeit only 2 heats in!) and a decent hight table top forward…but….there was a problem with the heat flags, so the heat has to be re-run.  That will happen right after Andy Chambers vs James Cox.

19:20..A tight heat that one.  Both starting to get better rides, but Andy Chambers just took the win.  Next up a re-run of Horrocks vs Thorpe…

19:40..Unfortunately the waves have flattened off through the Horrocks vs Thorpe heat, so the decision is made to postpone…

19:58..with the pushing tide the decision is made to cancel for the evening.  The wind is still here, but the waves have gone flat.

20:09…Pros will start tomorrow morning at 6:30am (briefing 6am) conditions permitting.  Every effort will be made to start the other fleets at 9am with a skippers briefing at 8:30am.  See you bright and early…the forecast looks good!
