Max Rowe on his greatest year yet

The next part of the season is always a bit of a blur as most of the events are pretty much back to back. The absolute high of my year though was taking 9th place in Holland. Its my best result since 2011 I think so that meant a lot to be up there in the top 10 again. We had some epic conditions over there which actually reminded me a lot of what we get in Vass, so I’m sure that helped a bit!

…I honestly had the fire hands pain so bad that I couldn’t even manage a smile at the thought of going back out there…

PWA Holland, crazy winds and big chop

This actually took away a lot of the pressure for the final event in Sylt as I knew with three top 16 positions it was going to be hard for me to fall outside of the top 16. Equally it looked even tougher to move that much further up. Sylt generally can be a bit of a low point of the year, I normally end up going a bit stir crazy just sitting around for 10 days waiting to compete! This year was no exception and we waited for the absolute coldest part of the week to start the freestyle! After I advanced my first heat I honestly had the fire hands pain so bad that I couldn’t even manage a smile at the thought of going back out there.

A heat that I will never forget was my heat against Ricardo Campello… one of the guys I looked up to a lot when I was a kid growing up and first getting into windsurfing. I felt pretty luck to get a chance to sail against him and when I first saw the ladder I was praying that I would meet him at some point. It was the battle for 9th place and I was feeling confident after sailing a very good heat just before but it didn’t really go my way to say the least. I ended up in the worst part of the area and with the wind dropping I struggled a lot for power and he absolutely smoked me! Will never forget that one, having the opportunity to beat the ex world champ and one of my heroes when I was growing up and I completely blew it! Still pretty happy to finish the year in 15th overall on the tour for the second year running!

I’m stoked to be the highest rank Brit in freestyle at the moment as this was always one of my biggest dreams

The final EFPT event in France was the absolute low point of my year. Still pretty fresh in my mind I don’t have too much positive to write about that one but I was happy that I did enough to hold on to my 5th place in the overall.

Another great point of the year was getting my First ever cover shot in the German Surf mag!

Nominated for UK Windsurfer of the Year – Go place your vote

I’m also very honoured to be nominated for the UK windsurfer of the year this year for my achievements. I’m up against some very tough competition. Hopefully this article clears up a bit about what I’ve been up to this year as my intro on the UKWA site is fairly vague…!  Definitely my most successful year so far and I’m stoked to be the highest rank Brit in freestyle at the moment as this was always one of my biggest dreams. Would like to also thank my main sponsors who have been amazing these last few years. North, Fanatic, Club Vass & Globalshots.
