Quick Fire with Bond

Chris Bond is the new Formula windsurfing UK champion, so Boards thought it was time to catch up with him for some quick fire questions…

Highlight of the year:

The highlight is, of course, winning the UK Formula Championships. I’ve been racing now for 6 years and have steadily made my way up the rankings; however, I never thought I would actually win it.

Equipment used:

Equipment has made a massive difference this year. In Formula, kit is so important and to get all three elements, (board, sail and fin) working together is the key to success. It’s my second year with Point-7 Sails and they never fail to deliver. They do so much R&D that it leaves me with very little to do other than rig the right size. I also had a new board this year which was the Gaastra Vapor 2, made by Tabou. This coupled with Z-Fins was the perfect combination, giving me an advantage over most of the fleet in light wind conditions.

Hardest racing conditions:

The toughest race conditions had to be 25+ knots and big swells when the Formula board becomes a bit of a beast to tame. So for that reason the toughest race of the season had to be at Christchurch and I’m gonna blame the swell for heading for heading to the wrong buoy in one race but was happy to amuse the rest of the fleet.

Most fun event:

Most fun event had to be Pwllheli where we enjoyed fantastic weather and some of the closest racing that I can remember. The lead must have changed hands three times between three people and all concerned were on level points going into the last race.

Most valuable lesson you learnt:

Well, if I’d have won every race that I led then I think I would have won a little easier overall. I’ve been learning lots on race tactics but still have some catching up to do with some of the other competitors

What you would like to improve on for next year:

I’m keen to increase my downwind speed in stronger winds. I’ve been more than pleased with my light wind performances but need to maintain this as the wind picks up, which is easier said than done.

Which fellow racer that deserves a mention:

Got to mention Dave Coles here who I battled closely with all season. He had a great lead after the first event which I clawed back over the season but for the last three events there wasn’t more than one point that separated us. I was happy for the light winds at Weymouth which allowed me to bring the title home.

Also want to mention youth sailor, James Battye, who is making great progress and is one to watch for the future.
