Gaastra… The Third Wave (2000, 2001, 2002)
Gaastra’s 2002 wave sails continue to be developed for global appeal. Their
designers and researchers realize that Maui isn’t everyone’s backyard, and that
power and range are essential to enjoyable sailing, wherever people live or
travel. All of the Manic, Grind, Pulse, and Echo, will deliver satisfying performance
and handling.
Manic
2002
The striking visual look of the 2002 Manic clearly states there is something
different in this hard core wave range developed by Barry Spanier, The Team™,
and World Champion, Kevin Pritchard. These new designs promise to deliver the
highest levels of performance in any situation, and are their best all round
wave sail to date.
The compact outlines have shortened luff lengths, and a soft, manageable feel.
A moderate drop tack moves the sail area lower for balance and efficiency. Long,
powerful profiles, and increased leech tension, produce more control at high
speeds. This combination produces a delicate response off the top, smooth control
in the air, and positive drive in the bottom turns.
The 2002 Manic is the best choice for down-the-line surfing performance, and
is a ‘rock garden tough’ surf sail, with nearly 100% Dimension X-ply™
fabric. A detailed chafe-proof, padded tack fairing includes a soft, functional
rigging handle and uphaul attachment. Roller wheel tack pulleys reduce downhaul
friction, and make tuning a breeze. Increased use of Kevlar™ internal
reinforcements keep weight down and strength up. Real leather chafe proofing,
smooth vinyl foot edging, and quality materials assembled with the exceptional
Gaastra attention to detail, all serve to bring you the best value in a performance
wave product.

Grind
2002
Taking the concept of a more powerful wave sail one step further, the Grind
2002 is the Manic on steroids. The slightly deeper profiles, are blended with
a boost in luff curve to produce smooth, easy handling, entirely suited to conditions
and situations that require extra power. The smaller sizes are ideal for high
wind freestyle, and the entire range has the lower center of effort, and fine
balance associated with the shorter outline.
A detailed chafe-proof, padded tack fairing includes a soft, functional rigging
handle and uphaul attachment. Roller wheel tack pulleys reduce downhaul friction,
and make tuning a breeze. Increased use of Kevlar™ internal reinforcement
keeps weight down and strength up. Real leather chafe proofing, smooth vinyl
foot edging and quality materials throughout, are all part of the consistent
Gaastra philosophy.

Pulse
2002
Pulse for 2002 takes advantage of an entirely new six batten layout that was
selected to produce stable power and excellent top end with a slightly taller
rig. The high cut foot and moderate clew position, work perfectly for freestyle
and flat water cruising. The precise balance also serves well in small waves
when the need arises. The Pulse has higher rig tension, and is geared for smooth,
high speed performance and glide.
A detailed chafe-proof, padded tack fairing includes a soft, functional rigging
handle and uphaul attachment. Roller wheel tack pulleys make tuning a breeze.
Kevlar™ internal reinforcement reduces weight and adds strength. Real
leather chafe proofing, smooth vinyl foot edging, all add to the exceptional
value of this fine new product.

Echo
2002
The 2002 Echo is a brand new range for Gaastra, named after Matt Pritchard’s
newest freestyle trick. He asked for the lightest, easiest handling sail to
help him win the World Championship. It has jumpy acceleration and flawless
balance, which makes radical contest winning routines look easy. It flies effortlessly
from tack to tack, without slamming or shaking.
The Echo’s five batten layout is ideal for a light, pliable feeling. We enhanced
this by making the foot sections long and shallow, with the draft positioned
to deliver power quickly. Producing speed instantly is the challenge in Freestyle,
in order to make a series of smooth transitions from trick to trick, rather
than be blasting for longer runs. The long flat foil shape develops lift quickly
at higher angles of attack. Yet it de-powers and floats through the manoeuvres
with ease, aided by the moderate twist and firm leech Every effort has been
made to keep weight down without sacrificing basic strength and durability.
The 2002 Gaastra Wave and Freestyle Series have been thoroughly tested with
the new Fiberspar Radius RDM masts, and have complete compatibility with them,
as well as normal diameter Reflex and Tidal Wave masts.
