The 2004 PWA Canadian Freestyle World Cup Day 4
The PWA Canadian Freestyle World Cup has drawn to a conclusion here in the
beautiful Magdelene Islands with Spanish sailor Daida Moreno (Mistral,
North) taking the overall victory despite losing to her sister Iballa
(Mistral, North) in the second single elimination final here this morning.
With crystal clear skies making up for yesterdays torrential rain,
competition kicked off early today with just enough time to run the
winners and losers final of the second single elimination before fading
winds became too gusty to continue with official competition. Iballa
Moreno’s win this morning was enough to move her into second place overall
in the final event results, leapfrogging over Swiss sailor Karin Jaggi
(F2, Arrows) who was forced to settle for third. After a superb comeback
in the double elimination, Junko Nagoshi of Japan picked up fourth place
overall, with Spanish sailor Silvia Alba taking fifth.
Winds this morning were blowing around 15 knots here in the Lagune du
Havre aux Basques with perfect flat-water conditions for the winners and
losers finals of the second single elimination. In the opening heat of the
day, the experience and wider ranging repertoire of Karin Jaggi (F2,
Arrows) proved enough to earn her third place despite a fighting
performance from Junko Nagoshi of Japan. The all Moreno final was next up
on the water with both sisters as determined as each other to take the
victory. Sailing below her normal standard, Daida dropped several moves in
the opening minutes while Iballa was ‘in the zone’, nailing a spock, a one
handed spock, a grubby and willy skipper. The world champion fought with
gritted resolve but failed to close the gap as Iballa forged ahead with
consistent moves throughout the heat.
The results here in Canada leave this years overall rankings with Daida
Moreno (Mistral, North) clearly in first with four straight victories,
Karin Jaggi (F2, Arrows) second, Nayra Alonso (Fanatic) third, Silvia Alba
(Neil Pryde, JP) and Iballa Moreno (Mistral, North) 5th. Tonight the event
draws to its final conclusion at the closing ceremony where the event
winners and 2004 overall champions will be crowned. Next stop on the PWA
world tour is in the contrasting location of Sylt, Germany where both men
and women’ s fleets will battle it out in both wave and racing
disciplines. Stay tuned to the PWA web site for all the news results and
pictures keeping you updated on all that is happening on the PWA world tour.
