The stage was set for the grand final here on the last day of competition. The most pressure was on event leader Kevin Pritchard. Mistakes would have cost him heavily, as a number of players were in a strong position to take his lead, especially his brother Matt Pritchard (US-10 Tabou / Gaastra) who sat in second place.

The forecast was for a reasonable sea breeze, and sure enough, after three days of waiting, it increased enough to complete the vital fourth race, which allowed the fleet to discard their worst result so far.

Immediately it looked like game over for Kevin Pritchard. His failure to make the final left the door wide open for Antoine Albeau (F-192 Starboard / Neil Pryde Sails), to take the event as he threw away his race 3 disqualification. The tension mounted further as Albeau, who also had to beat Matt Pritchard to take pole position, cruised past Matt as he fell on his final spock. Nik Baker (K-66, Mistral/ North Sails) kept his head to win, followed by Albeau, with Robby Swift (K-89, JP/ Neil Pryde) in third. This left Albeau in the lead as a 5th race was scheduled for a first possible start at 16.00

Here is the elimination 5 ladder

The fifth race final was an epic. Kevin overtook nearly everyone on the first reach. Both the Pritchard’s and Nik Baker made their final spocks, but Albeau fell, before nearly outstripping Baker who had to use his years of racing experience to hold his own and claim 3rd. The compulsory manoeuvres in Super-X racing level the playing field, and failure to complete a move can spread the fleet wide. To get such a split second finish for first place was outstanding, and the crowds on the beach here at the Ballena Allegre 2 Campsite, were on their feet as brothers Matt and Kevin Pritchard gunned down to the finish line. The call went Kevin’s way, and completed his amazing escape act. Two PWA event victories back to back put him leading both the Wave and Super-X tours. All eyes are on next weeks final Super-X event in Costa Teguise, Lanzarote to see who will win the 2006 series.
