DOWNINGS WINDSURFING COMPETITION

DOWNINGS WINDSURFING COMPETITION

The 9th Downings Windsurfing Competition, raising funds for the RNLI charity, will take place this year on Saturday 14 July and Sunday 15 July 2007.  Registration will be on Downings beach from 9am, with racing starting at 11am.

Nick Fletcher, the founder of the competition, says  “the main aim of the competition has always been to encourage children and novices to take part and have fun, but rivalry can still be fierce in this group!”

“Competitors as young as 5 years old have taken part in the races, with the experienced, international windsurfers providing both professional expertise and encouragement to them all. So, whether you are novice or experienced, young or young at heart, male or female, there is something for everyone.”

The organisers work very hard to ensure that the races are challenging and fun for all the competitors, but the safety of everyone is always the top priority and is co-ordinated by the experienced and professional volunteers of the Mulroy Cliff and Coastal Rescue.

Every year the numbers are growing for this event and there are always new challenges for the competitors, old or new to the event.   Spectators also have been amazed at the colourful spectacle of over 70 sails in Downings Bay at one time during the races, so even if you are not a windsurfer, bring the family along and have a look for yourself.
