IWA O’NEILL WAVESAILING TOUR, BELMULLET – RESULTS
Mikey Clancy reports
The final of the IWA wave competition took place in Belmullet Co. Mayo. It was was the battle of the big guns Finn Mullen and Oisin Van Gelderan. Oisin went into the the event just one round ahead of Finn. Belmullet once again produced the goods over the three days .On the 1st day Broken Kit was the order of the day as sailors battled with mast and a half high waves in 3.7m conditions. Finn and Oisin showed there class in sailing out the back to catch the Big Waves. Finn won an epic battle with Oisin.
The following Day the wind had swung onshore so the venue was changed to Fallmore. Clean logo high waves and cross-shore winds grated the competitors. The top two Finn and Oisin were neck and neck at this stage with whoever winning today likely to win the Title. The Final three were Finn, Oisin and Mikey Clancy who is a wonderful new prospect and is sailing well. In the end Finn took the victory closely followed by Mikey in 2nd and Oisin in 3rd.
It was still all to play for Oisin on the bank holiday Monday. He could win the Title if he was able to Finish 2 place ahead of Finn. It never materialized however as both were knocked out at the semi final stages. Young gun Mikey Clancy Won the final round ahead of Galway Sailor Morgan Mc Guire and Dave Garvey in the final.
This meant that Finn Mullen Won his First Irish Wave Championships.
