POLKERRIS BEACH COMPANY OPENS NEW CENTRE

Cornwall’s freshest windsurfing centre opens in May at Polkerris,
with a stack of new kit and terrific facilities right on the beach.
Located close to Fowey on the South coast, Polkerris is a small, scenic cove set in St Austell Bay.

The Polkerris Beach Company is the latest windsurfing venture from the Shillito family: Bob started the legendary Axbridge Animals Team 15 and Team AirBorn member George is an ex-Vass instructor famed for his partying as much as the quality of his freestyle and wave-sailing.

Family members Lynn, Rachel and Jack are involved in various capacities on the waterfront.

From the smallest sandcastle-building toddler to the seasoned
windsurfer, Polkerris has something for everyone. Picture this: a
sheltered, sandy beach in a small village, self-catering accommodation just 100m up the road, no through traffic, a beach shop and café, equipment rental, personalised windsurfing tuition and safety cover on the water. Round that off with a beer in the excellent pub right on the beach as the sun sets and you have the makings of the perfect Cornish beach scene.

Polkerris is a cracking location for a family windsurfing holiday. Bob
said: “Having been involved in the Team 15 scene for the last five
years, I found people kept asking me how they could progress from
reservoir windsurfing onto the sea. It’s a big step to move on to the
sea: Mums and Dads want to encourage their offspring, but need the
reassurance of safety cover and supportive backup, not to mention
somewhere to store the kit. So we are determined to help and are
especially keen to encourage young windsurfers to stay in the sport
and develop their skills”. “As a family we have derived a huge amount from windsurfing and we want others to benefit too”.

When the wind drops, Polkerris reveals itself as an excellent stand-up paddleboard venue as well, due to the shelving seabed pushing up a gentle swell that can give you immensely long rides.

Coinciding with the launch of National Windsurfing Week, The Polkerris Beach Company will be holding an opening event on Bank Holiday Monday May 5th with free, one-hour sessions for all levels of windsurfers and a hog roast on the waterfront.
