SWA 2008 SERIES

After a fantastic season, the SWA series has sadly come to an end for 2008. The series culminated with the BUSA Nationals in Calshot. The main focus of this event was the final event of the Club Vass Race Series and the chance to rack up those all important BUSA points for the individual universities.

Al Graham (Southampton) had already won the Race Series and the top prize of a Club Vass Holiday for two, but this was his chance to finish the series with a clean slate of 1st places in all the events. Unfortunately this was not to be the case as he was shunted into 4th place by fantastic performances by James Bullied (Exeter), Matthew McCormick (Oxford) and Hugh Sims-Williams (Bristol), who fought their way into the medals. In the ladies it was Gemma Lewis of Cardiff who took top honours, not only winning the ladies but also by finishing a very impressive 5th place in the Advanced Fleet.

The overall series trophies for freestyle, wave and ladies were also awarded at the prize giving. Chris Beng (Imperial) had already been crowned RRD/Ezzy Wave champ earlier in the season and had to settle for 2nd in the Boardwise freestyle, which was won with style by former UKWA Junior Champ Joe O’Callaghan (St.Mary’s). The Naish ladies series was unbelievably close and after 3 wave events, 4 freestyles and 4 race events, the results came out as a tie for first between Liss Earle (Exeter) and Sarah Bibby (Southampton)

With the SWA Series now finished it is time for the newly formed SWA-Team to start their campaign on the UKWA freewave series. We wish them the best of luck…

A super big thank you to all of our fantastic sponsors and everyone who has made the series a huge success! Plans are already underway for the Aussie Kiss festival in the Autumn and we hope that next year will be even more successful.
