King Of The Roads GPS Challenge

Westcountry Watersports & Skinner’s Fine Ales King of “The Roads” 2009

The guys at Westcountry Watersports in Cornwall have been wondering who is the fastest sailor on their home patch. They are hoping it’s either Pete, Rob or Alex from the shop however now’s your chance to prove it’s you. In April Westcountry Watersports grabbed the recessionary bull by the metaphorical horns and opened their second shop at Mylor Yacht Harbour on the River Fal in Cornwall. The expanse of water a stone’s throw from the shop is known as The Carrick Roads so it didn’t take them long to dream up The King of The Roads competition. Peter said: “we want to encourage a bit of healthy competition in which any sailor can take part and have a chance of winning”.

There are no restrictions on craft as long as it is wind powered and the measurement of maximum speed  will be by GPS worn by the competitor. Anyone suspected of entering a ‘creative’ GPS reading will subjected to ‘The paddle of shame” (SUP past the café in Mylor on a busy Sunday morning dressed only in a Borat Mankini while being pelted with water balloons – basically don’t bother cheating). Competitors speed, equipment and conditions will go onto a ‘Top Gear’ style leader board outside the Mylor shop and whoever is at the top when the competition closes will be crowned Westcountry Watersports King of The Roads 2009 and be allowed to wear the coveted yellow rash vest throughout 2010. The list of prizes is growing with generous sponsorship of a barrel of finest Cornish Ale from Skinners Brewery of Truro – Magazine subscriptions donated by Boards and Yachts and Yachting – some great gear from Gul international and Tushingham oh yes and did I mention there is a very fine barrel of beer from Skinners Brewery…..

There are many classes including Windusrf, Kitesurf and to give a bit of friendly  competition for the different dinghy classes at Restronguet Sailing Club there will be an individual class speeds for  each race class –  Even an Optimist can take home a prize for speedsailing…!

For more information or to register call Westcountry Watersports on 01872 275342 or 01326 376363. Alternatively drop into one of our shops at either 63 Fairmantle St, Truro TR12EG or Mylor Yacht Harbour.

The competition will end Wednesday 23rd December 2009 with a crowning ceremony (excuse for a drink) at 7pm in the Truro shop. As luck would have it this coincides nicely with the last late night gift buying opportunity before Christmas.
