Fintan Hoare, RIP

Michael O’Farrell writes:

Fintan Hoare from Abbeyfeale, Co. Limerick, lost his life doing what he loved most, windsurfing, on Banna Beach on the South West coast of Ireland on Saturday November 21st. Fintan would have revelled in the conditions that day but he had an underlying condition (diabetes since age 12) which may have contributed to his death

He was a true ambassador for the sport of windsurfing and was a true gentleman on and off the water and as dedicated a windsurfer as can possibly be.  Summer or winter, rain or shine,  Fintan loaded his car and headed for the sea at the slightest forecast of wind.  His enthusiasm for the sport never waned in over 25 years.  Even though his favourite conditions now were strong winds and waves, and a lot of windsurfers with his experience will not rig up for anything less, not Fintan, if there was only a chance he would get planing, he would “give it a go”  On days when we waited for wind I often suggested that we should try another sport like golf but he would only laugh!

There was no doom and gloom, credit crunch, job losses or state of the economy with Fintan, it was just “are you around at the weekend if there’s wind?”

Fintan and his black Golf, laden down with gear will be sadly missed around the beaches of Castlegregory, Brandon Bay and the Dingle peninsula by his windsurfing buddies but most of all by his wife Catriona and 5 year-old daughter Laura.
