The 2002 Verizon King of the Cape Freestyle Pro-Am has been recognized by
the Professional Windsurfing Association (PWA). This event will be a PWA
Freestyle Qualifier offering prize money of $15,000 USD, to be split $10,000
USD for men, and $5,000 for women. On the PWA Freestyle Tour, it will be
the third stop, following Neusiedler See, Austria event, and just proceeding
the Costa Brava, Spain Freestyle Event.

Being the ONLY US Pro Tour stop, we are anticipating great attendance
figures for spectators and competitors alike. So far, MANY top freestyle
pros from around the world have committed to attending the event including,
Maui sailor and 1999 King of the Cape, currently ranked 2nd in the world,
Josh Stone and his brother Jason Stone, Maui sailor currently ranked 3rd in
the world, Matt Pritchard, last years King of the Cape from Montreal,
Quebec, Martin Van Geenhoven, Barbados windsurfing luminary Brian "Irie
Talma, Rhode Island, USA born and bread pro sailor, Web Pedrick, Maui sailor
Nathan Mershon, and our own local pro from Long Island, New York, Jace
Panebianco. These top pro sailors will sure be challenged by ace rookies
from the Island nation of Bonaire, including Tonky Frans, his brother Tati
Frans, and Keke Dammers. And don’t forget, TOP Amateur sailor, Mike Burns,
who won the King of the Cape in 2001 will be competing at the Pro Level for
the first time, testing his mettle against the best of the best. All duking
it out on the water for $10,000 USD.

In addition to all these very talented men filling out the pro men’s
division, we have MOST of the top Women Pros coming to the event, from near
and far including TOP women freestylist currently ranked 1st in the world
Colette Guadagnino from Margarita, Venezuela, 2nd in the world Iballa Moreno
from the Canary Islands, Spain, and her sister currently ranked 3rd in the
world Daida Moreno, and Karin Jaggi from Switzerland. These women will be
pushed by such up and comers from the U.S. and Canada as Nori Hubbs, Kim
Martin, and Anick Violette. These top ladies will be competing for $5,000

For all pro sailor out there who have not committed yet to the King of the
Cape because of travel planning for the Costa Brava event just following our
event, arrangements have been made to preregister for Costa Brava at the
King of the Cape to ease your progress onto Spain. Flights to Spain can be
arranged out of Boston for Monday evening.
