The Laureus World Sports Award is the premier global sports awards honoring the greatest sportsmen and women across all sports each year. The Laureus World Sports Academy members select winners in seven categories. Six athletes are nominated in each category, and this year JP team rider Antoine Albeau is amongst the nominees! This is a great honor for Antoine who is nominated in the category ‘Laureus Action Sportsperson of the Year’ together with three surfers Greg Long, Mick Fanning, Stephanie Gilmore, Chris Cole (skateboard) and Danny MacAskill (BMX). Antoine is only the second windsurfer nominated this century and the only windsurfer nominated this year.
On 7 March 2010 Antoine is invited to attend a ceremony in Abu Dhabi for the announcement of the winners. He’ll be alongside superstars like Usain Bolt, Lindsey Vonn, Alberto Contador, Britta Steffen, Roger Federer, Lionel Messi, Valentino Rossi, Serena Williams, Jenson Button, Tom Daley, Lance Armstrong, Kim Clijsters…
Antoine’s profile on the Laureus website reads as follows: Albeau successfully defended his PWA Slalom World Championship in 2009. He has held 11 eleven World Championships in different disciplines since 1994, and is best known for setting the world sailing speed record in March 2008. Driven by 50 knot winds, he reached 49.09 knots on a course in France. In October 2008 he completed a six hour, 75-mile open sea crossing between Cherbourg, France and Poole, UK.
