An innovative scheme to create opportunities for young adults to train as watersports instructors for free is being piloted at youth charity UKSA.
A successful pilot will need to be run before the course can be fully developed and nationally accredited, so to launch the project, the Cowes-based training provider is seeking 12 candidates to test out the course.
Gary Kurth, UKSA’s Further Education Co-ordinator, explained: “This is the chance for young adults to completely change their lives, follow their dreams and potentially enter an amazing industry with a view to working in fantastic locations all around the world. Usually it would cost several hundreds of pounds to train like this. While this course isn’t fully developed yet, it is a stepping stone towards a new life and anyone serious about getting into the watersports industry won’t want to miss this opportunity.
“There will be some classroom work and theory related to the course, so our recruits will need to be dedicated and keen to learn. In return they will receive several highly desirable instructor certificates such as RYA Dinghy Instructor, RYA Windsurf Instructor, BCU Kayak Coach and BSUPA Stand Up Paddleboard Instructor – that’s four different disciplines.
“They should also get their Powerboat Level 2, First Aid and their VHF Radio Licence. It is a huge deal for any individual and will make for a fantastic CV."
If you are unsure and want to know a little more there will be an Open Day at UKSA on April 12 to explain the programme. Selection Day is compulsory and is on April 26th.
The pilot scheme will run from May 5 to July 6. The course is non-residential (although accommodation at UKSA can be arranged at cost to the participant). No meals are provided but there is a dining hall and coffee shop on-site. There will be a small cost to join the RYA and BCU National Governing Bodies.
Gary added: “If the pilot scheme is successful, we hope to offer the free Diploma course to up to 50 learners a year from September 2014, so watch this space. This is an exciting project which will open the doors of employment and professional vocational training to many more young people."
