Biggest Freestyle Moves in Bonaire – Explained

The PWA in Bonaire is about to start, which means all of the world’s top freestylers are over there already working on their biggest new moves ready to bust out for the competition.

Whilst we love watching the PWA freestyle we’re not ashamed to admit even we find some of the top moves more than a little baffling! So, we’ve asked Andy Bubble Chambers and Maeli Cherel to explain the top moves we could expect to see in the men’s and women’s fleets in Bonaire.

Bubble:

“It’s all about the combo moves in the men’s fleet this year. Combining two completely different moves together, even if they have different directions on rotation.

“With so many of the moves there is a point where you are in the same position to the wind as a completely different move. Some guys are able to stop the rotation at this point and completely change it into another move.

“For example you could be doing a full 360 rotation in the air but then stop it half way and then reverse the rotation in to something else.”

In plain english? Anything with a complete change of direction is going to score big.

We’re sure this will be something last year’s world champion Kiri Thode will be pulling out…http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TpdBWdTFLJk

Maeli:

In the women’s fleet there’s two main moves we could be looking out for: the double flaka on port and the Switch Kono on the starboard side. The double flaka is fairly self explanatory, a flaka, but twice.

The switch kono is a little harder to explain… it is a switch move that involves ducking the sail (so you’re back winded), pushing on your back hand and jumping into wind. Once airborne you quickly pull in with your back hand, tuck up your legs and land either in the position to sail away in the opposite direction (180 degrees basically which is actually a half switch kono which is what the girls are doing), or do the full 360 rotation round.
