Curacao set for IFCA Slalom Worlds

Curacao Challenge

In just its third edition, the Curacao Challenge has the honour of hosting the IFCA Slalom World Championships Prokids, Junior, Youth and Masters. IFCA President Bruno de Wannemaeker visited last year’s event to see if Curacao and the organization were capable, and they were. From April 19th -24th over 80 competitors will compete from 13 different countries, such as France, Australia, Portugal, Poland, New Zealand, Germany, the United States, Aruba and the Netherlands.

Curacao has great wind conditions year round with trade winds blowing around 20 knots. With an average of 8 sun hours a day and no need for a wetsuit, the island has everything windsurfers dream of. The event location is set on the St Joris Bay. This is a secluded bay on the North side of Curacao, known for its breathtaking surroundings, the island’s best wind conditions and no boats or other water traffic; just sea turtles, flamingos and a true free spirited windsurf spot as it is supposed to be. The location also provides a perfect up & close view for the spectators.

Choosing this location for the event was obvious. The real challenge was turning the location into a real event area as there were no basic amenities present. The Curacao Challenge decided to build a Surf Town from scratch with tents for shade and everything else built in original style with driftwood and bamboo. An atmosphere will be created, which is unique for contemporary windsurf competitions around the world. Curacao calls this: the Curacao difference.

As most competitors traveled a long way to get here and we want the most spectators possible, entertainment is added to provide fun for everybody. This means wakeboard-, freestyle- and kite surf shows, SUP races, live music, a kidscorner with special workshops, bikini show, beach tennis, bungee trampoline and much more.

Event news, results and photos and live streaming will be shared daily with the world through the website and social networks.
