Top RAF windsurfers took to Maui’s North shore for a closely fought wave championships…
The RAF took to the windy, wavy Pacific for the Pacific Challenge Wave Champs. Choosing Sprecks Beach gave the judges the best spot to assess one wave and two jumps in the gusty 25 knot trades. After a gruelling set of 10 minute heats Mark Thompson’s effortless style secured his victory despite the handicap of being a port tack sailor at his home beach of Rhosneigr.
Close on his heels was Stu Tilbury displaying the form that recently secured his 3rd overall in the 2012 BWA Masters Fleet. In third place was the 2011 RAF Wave Champion, Chris Rugg.
In 2011 the RAF Championships were held in Tiree, this year was Maui – where could it be in 2013???
Many thanks to everybody who helped make this possible including the RAF Sport Lottery, Hot Sails Maui for the kind donation of prizes, Maui Windsurf Co for a great price for kit rental, Guy Cribb and Ant Baker for invaluable advice in organising the Tour.
