The Ultimate Windsurfing Wipeouts

All of the best windsurfing wipeouts in one place…

If you’ve seen or have a unbelievable crash photo or video that you would like added to this list please email it over to [email protected]

Jason Polakow

Jason Polakow is the king of going big and this video just confirms that yet again. Not quite a wipeout for JP, but he narrowly misses taking a massive Jaws wave on the head… a few surfers weren’t that lucky though!

Robby Swift

Not quite a wipeout, but this is almost as good, if not better! Here Robby Swift is putting his gear through its paces and over the falls… does it make it out in one piece though?

Eight people, one board…

This isn’t windsurfing, but we couldn’t help including it in our crash reel! Eight people, one oversized board and a pounding shore break can only spell disaster…

Mitch Wagstaff in Luderitz

Mitch hits the deck at top speed in Luderitz, and he’s put together this great sequence shot so that you can enjoy it too!

Chris Murray, eaten by the Shoreham shore break.

The title says it all.

BWA competitor, Chris Murray shows that Shoreham takes no prisoners. On the quest for one more turn Muzza takes it too far and rides the wave right into the beach, with equipment annihilating consequences.

Ricardo Campello

The ultimate crash list just wouldn’t be complete without featuring the fearless Ricardo Campello, this is a bit of an ‘old school’ video where Ricardo goes for his traditional big floaty jump and bail routine a few times (from 58 seconds onwards). Plus, his triple attempts are pretty close but very scary to watch. We still don’t understand how, or more importantly why, Ricardo puts himself through this…

Philip Koster Goes Down

Ok, so this isn’t strictly just a crash video, but there’s enough BIG crashes in there of the former champion to make it more than worthy on this list.

Dunkerbeck and the exploding equipment

Now, we don’t mean to be picking on a certain Mr. Dunkerbeck, but it seems when the terminator crashes, he crashes big.

This clip is probably our favourite so far for pure brute strength. Dunkerbeck’s equipment quite simple buckles under the pressure of one of the most powerful men in windsurfing…

The Dieter van Eyken crash reel

Pro freestyler Dieter van Eyken has a valuable lesson (and a big laugh) for you this morning. When learning anything new, first comes the crashes. There’s no way to progress without wiping out, a lot. And to show just how much Dieter has put together another crash compilation from 2013. He wipes out every which was possible, time after time, which is exactly what’s needed when learning all the latest windsurfing tricks.

How many times did you crash in your last session?

How a windsurfing crash becomes a slap in the face…

Never gybe around a boat… this might happen.

We cannot get enough of this gybe crash, there’s something so unexpected about the boat appearing, and the complete surprise of the rider. A wipe out classic.

A compilation, within a compilation.

This video was put together and posted by Joost Dendraaier, many of the best, scariest, funniest and most cringeworthy crashes in windsurfing history all in one place. What a good idea, except he definitely missed a few… keep reading for more crashes!

It also includes one of the scariest crashes to watch, Boujmaa Guilloul going massive and landing very, very badly. This is a prime example of crashes going really wrong and not being funny, luckily Bouj is of course back on the water and going bigger and crazier the ever. We would expect nothing less from him.

Old school, high speed speedsailing stacks.

We’ve gone a bit retro here, but it’s worth it. Some great old footage featuring a very young looking Bjorn Dunkerbeck talking and bouncing along the water. Priceless.

The Big Men

Here, two of the biggest men on the PWA tour Bjorn Dunkerbeck and Josh Angulo have gone head to head, quite literally. Racing in Alacati, these two got a little to close with Josh sailing almost straight on top of Bjorn, and ripping his sail from leech to luff.

As you can imagine, neither sailor was too happy here and there were a few stern words to be had. But, what’s a broken sail amongst friends?!?

A Kite Crash

Ok, so this is a kitesurfing crash so we haven’t included it on the vote, but holy **** this must have hurt. Tom Herbert takes on the Red Bull King of the air, he certainly goes big, but unfortunately doesn’t quite ‘stick’ the landing; it’s more of an explosion than a landing to be fair. We hope you’re safe and well Tom, maybe time to switch to windsurfing!?!

Amanda Beenen, that forward crash.

How could we have left out this epic crash by Amanda Beenen? From a couple of years ago, Dutch rider Amanda goes for a forward, but loses her footing and does an incredible no gear forward… it looks like the landing hurt, a lot!

Whilst we have been running our own crash contest, here on Boards, but these guys started it all off in 2013…

Who do you think takes the title of best crash from these epic bail outs?

Here we go… another crash reel in a crash reel!

This time we’re looking at the very best wipeouts from the recent Rip Curl windsurfing pro tour event. Big names bring big crashes, and this is 2 minutes 58 seconds of wipe out gold!
