British Formula Windsurfing Champion Christine Johnston of Brighton, England just

missed out on the top three places at the recent Professional Windsurfing Association

Racing Championships that took place in Leba, Poland from the 6 – 10 August.

100 men and 18 women, including all the top international racers gathered to compete

there. It was one of the largest and best quality womens’ fleets gathered

to date in Formula Windsurfing.

Just 0.3 of a point kept Christine out of the top three, and off the podium.

Christine was, in fact, lying in second position overall going into the eighth

and final race of the championships, but a poor performance in the final race

saw her overall position slip to fourth.

Said Christine of her performance:

“I started thinking about the points, and where I needed to finish to

retain second overall going into the last race. It was a real mistake to do

that because it made me too anxious, instead of just focusing on the race. I

had my worst result of the event! I will be trying not to do that again!”

Christine’s next major competition will be the 2003 Formula World Championships,

currently scheduled, but not yet confirmed, to take place in Sardinia at the

beginning of October. Through her results at the British Championships in Hove

in May, and her result last week at Leba Christine has qualified in first position

for Royal Yachting Association grant support for the Worlds. Christine will

certainly be looking to improve upon her third position at the 2002 Formula

World Championships.
