Weymouth Speed Week 2011 – Thursday 20th Update

Kevin Greenslade and Ant Baker

Euro Speed Tour organiser Pete Davis brings us the latest update from Weymouth Speed Week 2011…

No wind for the first two days, and very little wind today, but the forecast is good for tomorrow (Friday). With competitors from all over Europe it looks like a great event to finish the year.

On the 3rd day of Weymouth speed week the final leg of the Euro Speed tour, the competitors finally got to show how fast they were. The wind gradually built throughout the day but with a falling tide, chop built up later on which made it very interesting with the morning leaders having to try hard in the afternoon to hold their positions.

Wind on the 4th day gave us two counting rounds so far and the dark horse from Luxembourg, David Garrel with two bullets is in the lead over Martyn Ogier from Guernsey and Thorsten Mallon from Germany in third. IF the event finished now David would take the Euro Speed crown from Thorsten Mallon by a very small margin. Thorsten needs to be in 2nd place or better here to to beat David. Zara Davis in the women’s fleet has secured her place in the history books with two wins here and will be crowned Women’s European Champion at the end of the week.

In the UKWA fleet Kev Greenslade defends his title from last year in 1st place, Martyn Ogier from Guernsey also a UKWA member is in 2nd place, Ant Baker trying for the double Slalom and Speed crowns in 3rd place.

Racing took place on day 5 yesterday, but the wind was much lighter and it did not qualify as a counting round. Not enough riders in the ISWC or UKWA fleets achieved over 28 knots 3 times. This leaves two more days of racing and a nail-biting finish.
