French board brand Exocet are clearly determined to keep the “long board” concept alive. as well as their 380cm Pacer raceboard – now the only ‘traditional’ raceboard available, they have just launched the Kona – a 350cm recreational longboard with a difference. We spoke to designer and head Exocet honcho Patrice Belbeoc’h about it at the London Boat Show (where you can see the Kona on the Exocet stand), and he’s really buzzing about the concept. Underneath, as can be seen in the pic, the board features a huge ‘duck tail’ cutout. The result is that when planing, the board feels like a 310, but when not planing, the tail section re-engages with the water, giving the full long waterline and fun of a longboard. The result is a fun cruiser for summertime; use with a 7.5m sail – early planing, longboard freestyle, but still a pleasingly manouevrable (in longboard surfing style) machine.
Here’s what Exocet has to say:
“Like a blast from the past, but yet the answer to the present call for the ultimate easy, forgiving multi purpose board suitable for all skill levels. The characteristic subtle shape combines stability, maneuverability, control and excellent sub planning performance. Cruising and racing in all conditions becomes a thrill and performing classic tricks becomes a breeze.
“The KONA is as demanding for advanced sailors as it is easy for “newbies” because of its versatile design characteristics with a gently curved outline, soft rails and flat rocker.
“Step on it and give it what you have, and you will be surprised to see what it can do. The ideal family toy, blending all freeride, freestyle and racing elements of the sport into one plug and play tool.
“The KONA combines the best from the past and present with a lot of input from the classic longboard surf designs with its ability to ride soft, long waves in marginal conditions.
Standard Features
