World Cup Guincho Wave Contest 2007 – Event Preview
The stunning Praia do Guincho beach in Estoril, Portugal, is all set to welcome The PWA World Tour to its latest stop for Windsurfing’s incredible wavesailing discipline.
Hosted by Estoril Coast Tourism, the finest men’s and women’s athletes on the international pro scene will meet at the cosmopolitan resort of Estoril, near the capital Lisbon, from June 4th through 9th.
The typically strong June ‘Nortada’ winds, and powerful Atlantic waves provide a true test of all round skill in radical jumping and stylish wave-riding at this magnet for windsurfers world over.
A firm favourite on tour, the famous hospitality of the Portuguese, epic conditions and a prize purse of € 45,000 has lured the sports biggest names to fight it out at the punchy open-ocean beachbreak near mainland Europe’s westernmost point of Cabo da Roca.
Already signed-up are last year’s winner and 2006 World Champion, American Kevin Pritchard (Starboard / MauiSails), the 2007 tour leader, and last season’s Guincho runner-up, Josh Angulo of Cabo Verde, and Brazil’s Kauli Seadi (Quatro / Naish) – who’s ranked 2nd in the waves so far in 2007.
They’ll be joined by fellow legends in the sport Nik Baker (Mistral / North) of Great Britain, radical Australian ripper Jason Polakow (JP / NeilPryde) and many many more.
Guincho is this season’s opening contest in the hotly contested women’s division. All the top names are returning once again, including 2006 World Champion Iballa Moreno (North) of Gran Canaria, her sister and last year’s winner in Portugal Daida Moreno (North), plus Swiss star Karin Jaggi (F2 / North) – who scored second at Guincho last season and 2nd overall in 2006.
All riders will be judged by a panel of experts on high-class surfing performance and aerial skills to determine the two most worthy winners.
