Nick Dempsey is in a very strong position going into tomorrow medal races, now 11 points clear of his next competitor, Toni Wilhelm of Germany in third. Boards caught up with Nick yesterday after the racing:
Race One
“The weather was unexpected, it all got a bit funky and people did come unstuck like we thought they would. It was slightly disappointing to lose five places on the third lap in the first race. I sailed really well, the wind shift and that was a bit annoying going from fourth to ninth. To finish the race, with the German and Polish right down the pack, but then to still be level on points after the discard, that took the wind out of my sails.”
Race Two
“The second race the wind started to die a bit, I was pretty up for that. I knew I was quicker than those guys in light winds. I probably sailed one of my best races ever. I had a reasonable start, then with the German and the Polish, I picked the one that was sailing the best and covered them, sending them the wrong way and controlling the race. I was really, really happy to come second.”
Dorian Takes Gold
“He’s always had the potential to do it, but he rarely pulls it off. Usually he has a couple of mistakes, but this last week he’s raced pretty top. If we had had a couple more light wind days racing then it might have been different, but he has sailed better than I have this week. He 100% deserves to win.”
The Medal Race
“Silver has been the goal since halfway through the week. We thought we’re not going to race Dorian, if he makes mistakes then great but otherwise just concentrate on doing well myself and attacking the German and the Polish. I’ve managed to do that really well and I am looking forward to Tuesday.
It must be silver.”
