Pitsford Pirates

Having secured their third consecutive regional title after dominating the 2012 Midlands series of the Team15 Inter-Club Championship, the Pitsford Pirates from Northampton certainly have plenty to celebrate.

With event three of the championship cancelled due to bad weather and having won both events of the 2012 four-event series to date, the team of under 15’s can now enjoy competing their final event (16 September at Edgbaston Watersports) with a place in the National final already in the bag.

We catch up with Pitsford Pirate brothers Dominic (11) and Adam (15) Meylan-Stevenson to find out how they got into the sport, who inspires them and life after Team15…

What do you sail?

D: I compete in the 5.8m class for Team15 but I also sail 6.8m outside of Team15.

A:   After finishing RYA Zone Squad, Ian Roberts, RYA Bic Techno National Junior Squad Head Coach advised me to progress on to under 19’s RS:X so I have now competed in the RS:X 8.5 youth class. The skills I’ve learnt from starting out in T15 have enabled me to progress into RS:X racing which has been fantastic.

When did you first try windsurfing and what was the experience like?

D: I first tried windsurfing two years ago on the sea in Cornwall. I actually hated it! It was really windy and I kept falling off but I did get better once I started practicing.

Do any of your family windsurf?

D: Yes my mum and dad do and my brother! He is in T15 too and is training to be an instructor! We all go windsurfing on holiday, which is really fun we are on the way to Cornwall at the moment.

Do you have any windsurfing plans when you leave Team15?

D: One day I would love to be in the Olympics so I was really disappointed when I heard it had been replaced with kite boarding. I will work my way up different kit and continue to race in as many competitions as I can. As well as racing I really love freestyle too, so hopefully that is something I can do more of.

A: I’ve finished my assistant instructor windsurfing course and will do my powerboat level 2 which will allow me to become an assistant instructor, and then I aim to become an instructor. This is something that I aim to do on a gap year abroad in the future. I am now helping to teach windsurfing at T15. I enjoy this every week and would recommend this to those not sure of what to do once they have finished T15 racing.

Do you have any windsurfing idols?

D: Nick Dempsey! It was awesome to see him win Silver in London 2012 – I always knew he could do it easily! I also got to meet him in Weymouth which was really cool.

The Team15 Champions Cup final is taking place on 13-14 October at Northampton Sailing Club, Pitsford and it will be third year running that the Pirates have attended the event.
