Emma Wilson – More To Come From This World Champion

Emma Wilson from Christchurch already holds an RS:X youth world title, but is just looking for more and more in 2015 and beyond. Daughter of one of the most successful female british racers Penny Way (now Wilson), racing is in Emma’s blood… but she is proving she has more than that as she makes it to the top.

Emma Wilson

I started windsurfing in Christchurch when I was about 7, my mum taught me and my brother.

I don’t think a single person inspires me I just think it’s so cool how the top people get to go all around the world to compete.

View from the house in Florida

My highlight of 2014 has to be the youth world championships in Florida. The place was amazing, staying in a house on the edge of the water. The wind was nice by then end of the week, at the start it was really light but not so bad. I didn’t expect to win it and it was so close throughout the competition even on the last day I was joint first!

2015 is going to be quite a busy year, I have my GCSEs, and there is youth worlds straight after. I think I will do the Europeans as a senior to get as much experience as possible and then hopefully I will go to the senior world championships in Oman. Then I would do ISAF youth worlds qualifier and if I get selected I will do that which is in Malaysia over Christmas. On top of all of that I am going to Miami World Cup next week and Palma World Cup in April.

I love racing but have tried a bit of freestyle too, which normally ends in a big splash on top of my kit!!

Windsurfing is a great sport to get into because –

  • You don’t have to do racing, there are so many disciplines.
  • I’ve met so many friends in England and all over the world.
  • It gives you something to write about in your english exam. (As I found out yesterday)
  • You can do it on your own or with other people
  • You don’t even need your own equipment, for example at OTC you can just go down there and use the kit.

Thank you to all the people that helped me get this far, OTC, Wattbike, sailing for gold, Bournemouth collegiate school, wealth management.
