The Future of Wave- The Chook Journal

Continuing with our futur of wave series we would like to intoduce the next episode, The Chook Journal. No we had no idea what this meant either so over to Tom and Ollie Pidden to explain.

The Chook Journal, What’s that?!
The Chook Journal is a name for our new project.

To understand what we are trying to do we have to look back a bit; We both learnt to surf before we started windsurfing and are wave sailors at heart, when possible we always choose waves as the medium to express our windsurfing creative juices. Because we started as surfers we enjoy a good surf movie. The more windsurf movies/videos we have watched recently, the more we feel they are missing something in comparison to their surfing counter parts. So we are aiming to develop a more adventurous and creative style with our windsurfing movies. We hope to bring them more in line with the soulfulness seen in many surf movies.

‘The Chook’ (the logo), what is it? And how is it relevant?

Chook is an Australian word for chicken. In our adopted home town of Margaret River there is a beach called Rivermouth with a silhouette of a chicken, made by bare sand and shrub, on the adjacent dune. When we were younger Rivermouth is where we learnt to take a beating from the waves. There is also a pretty good view of the point where the local windsurfers including our Dad would put on an inspiring show during the summer months. So the chook is a nod to the place we call home and the beach which we learnt to surf.

Who are we and what is our background?

We are brothers, Tom and Ollie Pidden.

Tom;
I’m 21 years old and I have been windsurfing for around 10 years, and surfing for many more. I’m a team rider for Patrik, Sailloft and K4 Fins and my aims in windsurfing is to sail in, decent sized, dtl surf and work towards having the smoothest laydown bottom to top turn I can.

Ollie;
I’m 17 years old and have been windsurfing for roughly 6 years. My main goal in windsurfing is to have as much fun as possible in the waves!

Although we have been making (mainly unpublished) short surf and windsurf movies for years, we are both still quite inexperienced in photography and cinematography. We have no related qualifications and all knowledge had been gained through trial, (lots of) error and some useful books our Mum brought us, Thanks Mum!

So what’s the plan?

We are currently editing our first short movie, under the new name. It was filmed in Brandon Bay, Ireland (another of our adopted home’s) for Easter It’s called Slow Start and will feature shots from the usual Brandon conditions and also footage from the day storm Katie came to town!

Boards magazine will be following The Chook Journal very closely you can also find them on their Facebook page (https://facebook.com/thechookjournal) or Instagram. (@thechookjournal). Photos and teasers from their movies will go up on these. But stay tuned at Boards to get everything!
