From Europe what events would you recommend coming to and why?
All of them have something special on offer to the European rider.
The closest event is the Hatteras Wave Jam in North Carolina, just a hop across the Atlantic for some board short sailing and surfing in Septemer! If you are looking for the experience of a lifetime consider the Pacasmayo Classic in Peru, with time to take in Lima and Machu Picchu or the Quatro Desert Showdown in San Carlos, Mexico. It really depends on what action you want to score, those looking for jumping should consider the Santa Cruz and Pistol River events and those looking for down the line perfection should consider Mexico, Peru or Maui. With rumors of a new tour stop next year keep your eyes on the AWT website and social media channels for the latest news.
Which are the easiest events to get to from Europe?
I just flew from London to attend the current event in North Carolina, interestingly I traveled less than those coming from Hawaii and had less jet lag!
Which event is most accessible for the AWT newcomer?
For those used to South Coast conditions in the UK then the Santa Cruz and Pistol River stops might be the closest to familiar conditions and hence most accessible.
We work hard to ensure that the conditions are challenging and safe for all. Competition pushes you to new levels, having a jet ski and safety crew on standby helps you to build confidence, it is not unusual to see Pro riders mentoring the Amateur riders.
Both Mexico and Peru offer perfect down the line training grounds without the ominous power of the heavy Hawaiian waters and Pacasmayo boasts one of the longest waves in the world…
imagine how fast you can develop your riding when you can have 30 turns and ride for 1.5 miles each wave!
