How (And Why) To Get Started On The AWT

Recommend airlines?

Many of us fly on the One World network, which includes American Airlines, LAN Peru as well as Alaska Airlines from Hawaii.

Be sure to decide on an airline and stick to it, collect miles and soon you will be traveling the world for free! Personally I have been using American Airlines for the past 20 years almost exclusively. They are really good with gear you can travel internationally with 2 x triple board bags fully loaded for only $150.

Good quality travel bags are a really good investment making it easy to travel and protecting your beloved equipment. Dakine has been a tour supporter since the beginning and interestingly the only equipment I actually pay for (happily) to ensure that I can travel easily, protected and in style!

Why would someone want to come along?

If you want to windsurf in some of the worlds best locations, meet like-minded people in a challenging and supportive environment I am confident that you will find a home on the AWT Tour. We are not driven by a corporate agenda, we are driven by our desire to enjoy the sport of windsurfing to the fullest in world class locations while exploring the cultural opportunities this offers.

What happens if there’s no wind? Is it a wasted trip?

In 5yrs there has only been one event without wind (Santa Cruz this year) but this was replaced by world class surf and we ran two full rounds of SUP contest. For a location to be selected as part of the AWT it needs to be ultra consistent for both wind and waves, we do not go where sponsors dictate, we go where it is best and most consistent, this planning gives us the best opportunity for success. Besides the sailing everything off the water makes the experience so much fun, Sam and the crew work tirelessly to ensure that there are daily activities, parties etc.

Are there any Brits and Euros already on Tour?

Yes, we have had a lot of visits from around the world and it seems to be increasing, drop this selections of guys and gals a message on Facebook and I am sure they’ll give you more inside info about what it is like to be part of the AWT Tour from outside of the USA:
