Katie McAnena – Wavesailor – West Ireland
I live in Sligo Ireland, sail anywhere along the west coast but living in the north west now.
Magheroarty has probably become my local spot. It’s 2.5 hrs drive away so not a major hike and even if you go up there and get skanked for wind you can always go surfing or even just being up there with the amazing scenery is a holiday in itself.
Windguru and magic seaweed are my go to sites. Same as most people I reckon! Usually fairly on the mark and give you a good idea on tides etc. But Ireland is a fickle, fickle place so you can’t put your faith in forecasting sights a lot of the time. It may look ” all time” windy sometimes but if you look at the air temps and the density of the low pressure most of the time in winter you end up with a violent, volatile, gusty wind that shifts around the clock during the day.
Sometimes I reckon I might as well read my tea leaves or my daily horoscope for a clue on the forecast, she’s a very elusive thing here in Ireland! The key is to go to the spot prepared for everything…windsurf gear, surf board, SUP, million layers of waterproofs, ski boots, thermal undies, thick thick wetsuit and a decent book. That way you’re covered for the inevitability of getting skanked and having to discover new activities. The hotel food and swimming pool are always a guaranteed forecast!!
Further advice would be stay mobile, read the tides very well as Ireland is super tide dependent. Don’t ever expect an epic session. Go with an open mind and if it switches on and you score you will not want to be anywhere else in the world. When it doesn’t come together you’re not too disappointed and you can just go to the pub!
