The Gran Canaria PWA Grand Slam 2005 has kicked off full force as the PWA fleet was warming up for competition in 3.7 – 4.2 conditions all day. Despite small waves, the action was first class with riders throwing big backloops, arched pushloops, stalled forwards and air chachoo’s. The in-move of the day was clearly the shaka, as many sailors were pulling them off both going out and coming in.
As registration is completed, it’s just one more night to go before the official competition begins. Depending on tomorrow’s conditions, the contest will start off with either wave performance or freestyle. With many riders competing in both disciplines, it is going to be hard work for the fleet this week in Pozo’s relentless winds.
Pozo’s local pool of talent makes for an impressive home team taking on the international wave and freestyle elite. Jonas Ceballos (E-40, Fanatic), Dario Ojeda (E-211, Quatro/ Gaastra), Marcos Perez (E-7), Bjorn Dunkerbeck (E-11, North), the Moreno Twins (Mistral/ North) and Nayra Alonso (E-4, Fanatic/ Severne) among others have the home advantage here on Gran Canaria, but the PWA’s finest will stop at nothing to beat the locals at their own game.
Tomorrow’s skippers’ meeting is scheduled for 09:30, after which the game is on as the first leg on the Canaries tour gets underway Pozo style. Stay tuned to www.pwaworldtour.com for all the news, pictures and results from the windiest place on the tour.
