Wind’s gusting well over thirty knots tore across the beach and out to sea at Sotavento in the South of Fuerteventura today as the fastest of the fast congregated in preparation for the start of the PWA 2005 Slalom 42 Tour.
For over twenty years, the huge expansive beaches of Jandia have hosted some all time World Tour contests and in 2005, the azure blue waters, will see a return to the traditional Fuerteventura disciplines of Speed and of course Slalom.
Lining up to prove their mettle are some of the biggest names in Windsurfing history. Among the registered entrants are countless champions of past and present. Along with the fastest sail powered men and women ever to take to the water.
Twelve times Overall World Champion Bjorn Dunkerbeck (North) will stand shoulder to shoulder to shoulder with such names as Kevin Pritchard (Starboard, MauiSails), Antoine Albeau (Neil Pryde), Steve Allen (Fanatic, Neil Pryde) and Micah Buzianis (F2, North), all of whom have held the PWA Racing World Title at one time or another. In addition, the fastest windsurfer on earth, Finian Maynard (F2, Naish) will be keen to see if his outright speed can hold off the challenge from the big men of slalom.
The women’s division is no less loaded; with multiple PWA World Champion Karin Jaggi (F2), going head to head with current PWA Racing Champion Allison Shreeve (F2, Neil Pryde). Shreeve took the title in 2004, her first year on the tour. Jaggi, however, is the fastest woman windsurfer on earth and no stranger to the Slalom course, so she will be hard to beat in the challenging Canarian conditions.
