Roddy Coull – in memoriam

We regret to report the sad loss of highly accomplished windsurfer, instructor,
trainer and friend to many, Roddy Coull. Roddy 34, from Glasgow died during
a trip to Vassiliki, Greece on 23 June.

Roddy, or ‘Rags’ as he was much better known, was a well known and highly regarded
wavesailor in Scotland during the early eighties. He then moved in to the world
of windsurfing instruction in 1986, working in many RYA centres in the UK and
abroad. He built up his experience and competence qualifying as a level 4/5
instructor in the early 90s, and spent many seasons instructing at Club Vassiliki.
In late 90s he focused on qualifying as an RYA Trainer which he did passing
with flying colours during 1999.  Since then he had been very active in
training instructors and inspecting centres in the UK and overseas.  His
training abilities and communication skills were exemplary building excellent
rapport and gaining respect from all who he came into contact with, he had an
uncanny affinity with his pupils and peers. During his final trip to Vassiliki,
where he passed away, Roddy was playing a key role in the development of a new
training model with fellow RYA 4/5 Trainers.

Roddy had a firm belief in improving the standards of windsurfing instruction
and building on the image of the windsurfing instruction circuit.  He worked
with adults and children, devoting an entire summer to junior schemes.
Roddy would adapt and tailor his training techniques to the individual sailor
giving pupils a unique and valuable experience.

RYA Windsurfing Manager Jon White commented: "This is a very tragic
loss, Roddy will be greatly missed by his friends and colleagues within the
windsurfing community. Particularly by many of the participants and instructors
who feel they have benefited for their encounter with his unique talents.
"
