COLGATE PWA WORLD CUP, SYLT – DAY SEVEN

The 2006 Colgate PWA World Cup Sylt, Day Six

29.09.06 – By: PWA / Brian McDowell

Fluky conditions measure the technical skill of the PWA’s elite racers as a testing fifth race is held. Event leader Micah Buzianis (US-34 JP / NeilPryde) glides effortlessly through his qualifying heat, while tour leader Antoine Albeau (F-192 Starboard / NeilPryde) secures his spot in the final just before the wind shuts down. Third placed Arnon Dagan (ISR-1, Fanatic / NeilPryde) is still very much in the game just ahead of light wind racing wizard Ross Williams (GBR-83 Tabou / Gaastra). The wave and freestyle fleets are forced to patiently sit out yet another day for their turn to perform.

Race Director Juan Antonio Aragon made no hesitation to set a course, when after a windless morning, 8-11 knots of wind materialised. Next on the agenda was race 5, with four qualifying heats and two semi-finals deciding who’d earn places in a 12 man final.

Race 5

Bernd Flessner (G-16, F2/ NeilPryde) showed early form easily winning his heat, and Ross Williams won heat three and Bjorn Dunkerbeck (E-11, North) won heat 5.

Gusty winds then disrupted play but the first semi-final was completed and Albeau clearly showed his intentions with a competitive win over Steve Allen (AUS-0 Tabou / Gaastra) and the impressive Florent Renard (FRA-5, JP / NeilPryde).

Another name who’s impressed on his debut Slalom 42 event was Klaas Voget (G4, Fanatic / Neil Pryde) missed out this time, but is sure to be a name to watch our for in the future.

Racing was called off around 15.00 leaving the last semi final and winners and losers pending. With winds still unsuitable for freestyle, the event crew ended competition for the day at 17.00 and set a skippers’ meeting for 08.00 for day 8, with a first possible start of 08.30 for all wavesailors, racers and freestylers.
