Hickling Fun Day
Hickling Windsurfing Club held its first social event for some years on Saturday 9th September. The conditions were perfect, warm and sunny with light to moderate winds.
Members were to compete in a speed event in the morning which consisted of two speed guns
deployed from the club launch moored in the centreof he broad. This proved to be quite unnerving for those of us in the boat as the competitors discovered that the best speeds were gained by aiming straight at us and bearing away at the last second.
Best of the day was Tony West with a hard-fought 25mph, runner up Geoffrey Whitworth
(24mph) and fastest lady Marie Winter. A GPS speedo for each of them was kindly donated by RIKS windsurfing. On the shore a ‘guess the year’ competition and a picture quiz, which proved a little difficult but never the less kept some members occupied over a hotdog lunch.
In the afternoon we managed two races the first of which saw some unconventional start tactics of clew dragging and water starting as the main pack gathered pace behind them. Chaos prevailed with the majority in the picture going before the start time.
With lessons learned the second race proved more interesting as wide styles continually gained and then lost ground to longer boards. Overall race winner was our young hot shot Ben Harwood who must have found this a doddle after competing in a super-x the previous weekend.
Thanks must go to Wendy for the excellent hot food and to Riks, Energise and Quayside Winsurfers for their generosity in donating all the prizes. Those who took part were photographed by Robert Scanlon of Seabourne photography who’s excellent pictures were printed, framed and on sale by the end of the day.
The event was judged to be a resounding success for us and for Robert going by the numbers around his mobile office.
