FANATIC SUPPORTS CAPE VERDE YOUNGSTERS

Fanatic Newcomers will join the PWA Event in Cabo Verde

Fanatic, North Sails and Planet Windsurfing have selected 3 local windsurfers who got a wild card from the PWA to join the specialist wavesailing event on the Island of Sal, Cape Verde, taking place from February 22nd till March 4th.

The local boys have come a long way from playing on their skim boards. An opportunity of a life time, North Sails sails and Fanatic boards in conjunction with, Surf Zone Cabo Verde, Planet Windsurfing, Shark Zone, Morabeza Hotel, Cape Verde Portal, and The Palm Cabo Verde have come together to sponsor “The Boys” in their quest to take the windsurfing world by storm.

Djo, Mitu and Titik are three of Cabo Verde’s favourite “surfista’s” (surfer boys). Friends from the age of 5, the trio have made the journey together from swimming to surf to windsurf. From a young age all three were fascinated by the ocean and determined to make it their playmate.

Titik’s encounter with windsurfing started out at one of the local surf schools, where he worked the shore break service. Prior to this Titik used to spend hours surfing the waves and skimming the shore. Like Djo and Mitu, Titik loves a challenge and has never been afraid to take risks. As a result his talent is boundless in surf, kite surf and wind surf. Excited at matching his skills with the best in the world, Titik will no doubt make an impression in his windsurfing championship

Mitu at a young age used to build little boats and play with them in the water. He was intrigued by the way the wind would control the direction and speed of the boat. It was this that drew him to water sports. The first time he windsurfed, Mitu used a home made board and a large plastic sheet. Standing on the board he placed one end of the plastic under his feet and held the other end up

with his hands. Going down wind the entire way he was addicted. Since then Mitu has gone on to excel at every type of surf. One of a few, Mitu can surf, windsurf and kitesurf the most powerful waves on the island, including Punta Preta, the site where the PWA event will happen. His potential to excel and match the best in the world is unlimited.

Djo used to spent hours on the local pier watching the tourist windsurf up and down the bay. Determined to ride along side of them, he started working at the local surf station in hope of acquiring some tuition and windsurf material. Gigi, a local cape verdian, who opened the first surf school in Santa Maria, took Djo under his wing and introduced him to the sport of windsurfing. In return Djo watered plants and helped out around the centre. The first time Djo went out in strong winds and no harness, at the age of 15, he was so tired he nearly cried. However determined as ever he put on a harness and moved from speed to waves within months. Djo has this addictive personality full of energy that can be seen in his windsurfing. Always ready to take a risk and push the boundaries, he will definitely shine at the PWA wave championships in Sal this month.

An amazing windsurfing trio with contagious personalities, Cape Verde’s surfista’s will definitely leave a strong impression with both the competitors and the spectators. Though low on international experience, Punta Preta has been their playground for many years. Nobody knows these local waves like they do. From home made boards and plastic sheets to Fanatic boards and North Sails sails these boys have come a long way, and the journey has just begun.
