ULSAN PWA WORLD CUP – EVENT PREVIEW

The 2007 Ulsan PWA World Cup Event Preview

01.05.07 – By: Brian McDowell

At long last, the 2007 Slalom 42 title race is almost open. And where better for a new season to start than a sparkling new tour stop like Ulsan, Korea? The event, in association with the Ulsan Broadcasting Corporation, runs from May 5th through 12th.

A new location, and a €45K prize purse has certainly lured the top players of the PWA’s exclusive race discipline to compete in the tropical waters, and seasonal trade winds at Jinha beach, in the Sea of Japan.

Already on the entry list are emphatic 2006 World Champion Antoine Albeau (Starboard / NeilPryde), last year’s determined runner up Micah Buzianis (JP / NeilPryde), all-round threat Kevin Pritchard (Starboard / MauiSails), world speed record holder Finian Maynard (F2 / NeilPryde) and total windsurfing legend Bjorn Dunkerbeck (T1 / North).

There are also a few surprise entries. Making a welcome return from a lengthy injury lay-off is racing specialist Wojtek Brzozowski (Severne / Starboard), from Poland, and a name more familiar from the wave and freestyle scene, Britain’s Robby Swift (JP / NeilPryde), who actually started his competitive career as a youth racer.

In the women’s fleet there’s a strong contingent of Asian-based racers, many of whom are making their PWA debuts, including Koreans Young Mi Choi and Yun Hee Lim. They’ll line up alongside the likes of the strongest competitor in the history of the women’s sport, Switzerland’s Karin Jaggi (F2 / North), and 4th placed finisher in 2006, Sarah Herbert (Starboard / Naish).

After hosting several regional and national events, the Ulsan event infrastructure is certainly impressive. Now boasting full PWA status, this metropolitan city can now truly showcase its windsurfing and tourism potential to the world at large.
