Scottish Windsurfing Newsletter 2007
Welcome to the first 2007 Scottish Windsurfing Newsletter. My intention is to bring you up to speed with regards to what’s on and where across Scotland over the coming summer season. So read on…..
Some major advances in activity have been taking place within Team 15 – with more clubs becoming involved this year in in Scotland it’s looking like some very busy interclub events will take place. Clubs looking to compete this year are, The Loch Insh Monsters, Monikie Maniacs, Eastkilbride Eagles, Clyde Barracudas, Tiree Extremes and the Sportscotland Superstars. We are also working closely to support new clubs coming on line for 2007.
The interclub dates have been set and the kids are eager to get started with the first date at Eastkilbride on the 10th of June, Lochwinnoch on the 30th of June, Loch Insh on the 5th of August and finally Monikie Country Park on the 25th of August.
Plans are already underway to return for the Team15 Tiree tour during the wave classic in October.

New for the 2007 season is the Scottish Windsurfing Series, this series of events is designed to get all you guys back on the water in more social surroundings! The SWS has six events across the country, check out the calendar. If you fancy coming along to an event it would be great to see you all there, the events promise to be easy going with all kinds of fun racing for everyone, the serious racers out there will also. I am sure you will find some testing competition at the events.
The fleets are not classified on board type or sail size (exceptions are T15 and Youth), what it comes down to is your age so if you have an old Alpha we would love to see you!
The age groups are divided as follows.
T15 8 – 15 (fleets based on sail size)
Youth 16 – 19 (raceboard fleet)
Masters 20 – 35
Veterans 36 – 105
So it really is simple just get out and enjoy yourself at these events.
The events will have a combination of course and slalom racing all weather dependant. The exception is the GOFAST SPEED challenge to be held later in the season (prior registration is required for this event and can be done by emailing Robin Nicol). The price is cheap too with evening events costing £5 and day events £10 to enter. At the end of the warm season I intend to have a prize giving for all the trophies to be handed out with all the usual madness that windsurfers bring to an event. And finally, the BIG ONE. The Scottish Windsurfing Festival was a great success last year and with the backing of the RYA, South Ayrshire Council and some very kind sponsors we are bringing it back to Troon, South Ayrshire. The event will work on the same basis as last year and we are hoping to make it bigger and better for 2007. The activity list is huge so here goes:
Slalom, Course Racing, Super X, Speed Challenge, Beach to Beach Sprint. We are also including taster sessions for Beginners, Intermediate and Freestyle Clinics. There are Kit Demos and Kit for Sale. Kite Surfing and Kite Demonstrations, Blo Karting, Mountain Biking, Beach Volleyball, and new this year the “Oldest Gear in Town” Competition. Convinced that there are some amazingly old pieces of gear out there and we want to see them on the water for some nostalgia, mad cap beach games and not forgetting the all important party in the marquee.
Hopefully by the time you read this the Festival Website will be up and running so check it out.
