Polish on top in Portimao

Alvor beach, Portimao witnessed some extremely close racing between Wojtek Brzozowski and Gonzalo Costa Hoevel in the highly competitive mens fleet, but in the end it was Wojtek who dominated the racing at this years Formula Windsurfing World Championships. He therefore added yet another World Title to his name, and took home his share of the €30,000 prize pot. Gonzalo had to settle with 2nd place, and Michal Polanowski ended the regatta in 3rd. Britain’s Ross Williams finished close behind in 4th.

The female fleet also saw some extremely close competition, this time between Marta Hlavaty and Allison Shreeve. Throughout the final few days of the event they continuously traded 1st and 2nd, and having shared the same hotel room all week, there were some very tense moments! In the end though it was Marta who managed to nudge ahead by winning the eleventh race of the regatta, and take first place by just one point from Allison.

The event held on Alvor beach, Portimao, Portugal was a great success. This was mainly due to the excellent organisation from the Overpower Windsurf club, and the one hundred competitors that turned up for the racing. Cerri Williams (executive secretary of the IWA) commenting on the event said “We have a thriving and stable class and this was proven by the excellent turnout achieved here in Portimao.”
