WEST WITTERING BEACH:

West Wittering beach in West Sussex is one of the few privately owned
beaches in the UK. Fifty years ago the locals grouped together and
purchased the land to prevent development on the site. Since then the
owners, West Wittering Estate, have carefully conserved the area in its
rural state by charging visitors to the beach. Each time you visit the
beach you directly contribute to its conservation so that it is there for
all to enjoy.

A windsurfing club has been at West Wittering beach for over 25 years;
West Wittering Windsurfing Club was set up by Simon Bassett over 12 years
ago to allow windsurfers and more recently kitesurfers to gain access onto
West Wittering beach. The Club runs a zoned safety system on the beach,
full jet boat rescue cover and has facilities including changing rooms,
showers and club house. We also have full hire facilities including all
the latest 04 equipment from North, Starboard, Fanatic, JP and Hot Sails
Maui kids rigs.

At the windsurfing club we are a RYA Fast Forward windsurfing school,
running courses for all levels and have private lessons available from our
resident coach, Jem Hall. Kitesurfing courses are also available
throughout the season.

The beach itself has conditions to suit beginners to experts, at low tide
there is a fantastic shallow lagoon which is safe and an ideal place to
learn and great for perfecting new moves; mid tide is ideal for
intermediates and at high tide, West Wittering gets some great
waves. Ideal directions for West Wittering are south westerly which is
side onshore, westerly produces side shore conditions while northwest is
cross-off. North easterly is directly offshore, east is port tack, side
shore and southeast is port tack onshore. We have a free web cam which
will give you tide times, wind speed and direction, wave height and water

Membership is available on an annual basis to anyone who would like to
join, it costs £145 for a single membership, £215 family and £80 for a car
park pass. We also have a joining fee of £40 which if you join before
March 2004 is not applicable. A day ticket is available to non members
for limited visits to the beach whilst windsurfing. Kitesurfing, however,
at present, is restricted to WWWC members only all year.
