Help Save Windsurfing in Gran Canaria

Check out the PRESS RELEASE: THE CLOSURE OF THE ACCESS TO VARGAS BEACH on page two or by clicking here.

Gran Canaria, and the Canaries in general, are a much loved windsurfing destination, especially for Brits. Now though, we have heard the news that windsurfing on GC (and potentially on further Canary islands) is now under threat.

The access to many beaches has been changed, from completely closing off the access to Vargas, to only allowing kite surfers to launch at Pozo (who can picture the chaos?!?!).

Just another day in Pozo!

The best explanation we have found so far has been posted by John Skye on his Facebook page, here’s what John had to say:

“After changes in the laws here in Gran Canaria they have now put up barriers preventing people from driving onto Vargas beach and effectively making it almost impossible to sail. For the Kiters it is even worse as they now have nowhere on the island to go other than Pozo! They have also starting fining people for sailing on other beaches, again restricting everyone to Pozo or the harbour in Arinaga.

“Anyone that has sailed here in Gran Canaria will realise how big a deal this is, as Pozo simple can’t handle that many people. I heard that they are also doing the same across the other islands in the Canaries. Please join the grouphttps://www.facebook.com/groups/132735610098308/ and also share this link and spread the word. For anyone on the Island at the moment there is a demonstration planned for this Saturday (18th) at 12:00pm.”

Boards will keep up to date with the situation and let you know how you can help in the near future, for now we ask the Boards community to please join the group stated above and show your support to keeping Gran Canaria windsurf friendly.
