Things are really getting mixed up on the PWA wave tour this year, with fresh faces and returning talent some of the top sailors in the world are finding themselves out of the main event draw and having to sail in the trials in the next event, including the UK’s Ben Proffitt.

Here’s the automatic entry list for PWA Tenerife:

As you can see the likes of Proffitt, Kenneth Danielsen and Flo Jung are absent.

Here’s an explanation of why from the PWA:

“The entry structure at all events is the same and is based on a combination of last year’s ranking, current ranking and results from the previous year’s event at the same venue.

“The following sailors are all qualified for the Tenerife main event, anyone else will require either one of the very few wildcards into the main event, or to qualify through the trials. There is some overlap between the 2 sections that are taken from the 2014 ranking and the 2014 rank / Tenerife 2013 results, but they all fit comfortably into the allocated places so it works out.

“For Tenerife there are local organiser wildcards and 1 for the Spanish Federation. What used to be allocated as wildcards by the PWA directly are now places in the trials.”

We doubt the likes of Proffitt will be phased by having to do the trials to make it into the main event, but with 22 people already applying for trials places it’s going to be hard work to make it into these, let alone through to the main event.

On the women’s side 23 women are already signed up for the Tenerife event, it’s great to see more and more women pushing the level and increasing the numbers. Now, fingers crossed for wind and waves.
