A rather intriguing competition has been thought up down in Weymouth, if you like windsurfing and cycling you simply must give this a go!
“A challenge hatched in a pub over a pint is never normally the best when reflected upon the next day, but a rare few sometimes have merit (depends how many pints I suppose! Ed). The Water Duathlon was thought up by local wave-sailing guru Andy Chandler, whereby competitors windsurf from the OTC centre to Overcombe and then swap their windsurfing kit for a bike and cycle back. Keen to transform the concept into a viable challenge, we have been liaising with the Portland Harbour Authorities and SailRacer (SailFest organisers) to make the event a reality.
“On the 24th August, Tris set off to pilot the concept and check its viability. In a good NW wind, he reached the north harbour entrance in 2 minutes, thinking “This is going to be straightforward”. It all went a little downhill from that moment, the NW wind direction meaning it was offshore in Weymouth Bay. That said, a run of 37minutes for the windsurf and 20mins for the bike sets the benchmark for future participants to beat. Watch out for news as we are sure this event has the legs to make it into the calendar for 2014!
