One Brit missing from the recent PWA action has been Jamie Hancock. Like Swift (read all about Swift’s recovery and performance in Klitmoller here), Jamie has been injured preventing him from taking part in Klitmoller.

Boards caught up with Jamie to find out more about what happened and when we can expect to see the British champion back on the water.

The week after coming back from a successful 9th place in Tenerife I broke the lower part of my fibula from awkwardly turning on it whilst running about. I was then in plaster for the next 5 weeks. During that time though I developed a DVT (deep vein thrombosis) in my calf which is basically a blood clot from being static in a cast. It is quite unlucky for someone my age to get that but one of the things to be wary of is the blood clot breaking off and moving round your body to serious areas like the heart or lungs.

Within 4-5 minutes there were 4 paramedics, a film crew and Peter Andre looking through my front room window.

So a week after the DVT I was on my sofa playing with my dog and I developed some pains in my chest. I knew that I had to be careful with any of these symptoms so I called the NHS, they subsequently arranged an ambulance to come.

I can tell you, if I did actually have heart problems then I think that would have been it there and then. My dog was going ballistic, I couldn’t do anything on the crutches and had 10 people around me whilst wondering if I’m about to die. Anyway, it turned out to be a muscular problem and am very fit and healthy otherwise, luckily.

About 2 weeks ago I had the cast off and into a protective boot which has allowed me to do some light physio.

I have to admit it was quite painful watching the PWA lifestream in Denmark on the final day watching me drop from 9th to 27th in the overall ranking. But i’m on the mend now and will hopefully be on the water again in 3 weeks. I will be missing out on Sylt and don’t think I can afford both Maui and Chile, so am likely to make a full come back in Chile and hopefully enjoy some of the British autumn in preparation.
