World Windsurfing Week 2010 – NWW goes global!

That’s right, following the huge success of National Windsurfing Week in the UK – as conceived in this very website’s forums – Bjorn Dunkerbeck has got involved to take the idea worldwide in 2010. And seeing as us Brits are ahead of the game, with plenty of events already in place (check out, this could be our opportunity to make some British noise on the world windsurfing stage. Read on – the following announcement arrived yesterday (13 April 2010) from Claudia Bieker / Caroline Opp:

World Windsurfing Week: get involved, learn how to surf & win great prizes

World Windsurfing Week goes international: between 1st and 9th of May, World Windsurfing Week will take place all over the world for the first time! During this week, windsurfers all over the globe will be organising activities for new windsurfers. After two successful Windsurfing Weeks in the UK in 2008 and 2009, the movement is now international. Schools, clubs and centres will offer courses, workshops, contests, festivals, parties, BBQs and a lot more.  On, they can publish their events in a blog.

Windsurfing is becoming more popular

Bjorn Dunkerbeck himself, world champion 36 times and the world’s most successful windsurfer, is spokesperson of this worldwide project: “everybody can learn how to surf! With the modern equipment, taking up windsurfing is easy and that’s what we want to show people”. Due to new boards and sails, a lot of people have started to windsurf in the past years.

But it’s also new disciplines that have awoken the interest of many. Freestyling, for example, is a new, revolutionary trend that a lot of youngsters have been following. Freestyle windsurfing can be done anywhere, even in shallow waters at a lake nearby. Besides, more and more women have followed the trend and have taken up windsurfing – the new equipment is much easier to handle. A beginners’ course takes approximately three days – back in the old days it took a week.

Windsurfing: enthusiastic & interactive

This is the message that will be spread by the community during World Windsurfing Week. The idea was born by enthusiastic surfers that want to give all kinds of people access to their sport. They therefore organise courses, workshops, get togethers and other activities to get friends, family and anyone who’s interested windsurfing. The events can be designed any way they wish – everything is possible as long as it’s fun!

The activities are published in the following blog: On everyone can announce his or her event and mark it on a map – this way, interested surfers can search for activities in their vicinity. Everyone participating can then publish pictures, videos and comments regarding the event and hence becomes an interactive member of the worldwide windsurfing community. The partcipants will automatically enter a raffle where the “best activity”, the “craziest picture”, the “craziest video” and “most people on the water” will be awarded. Prices will be sponsored by the partners Cobra, JP Australia, Lorch Boards, Severne, Starboard, Club Mistral, Surf & Action Company, NeilPryde and Surf Magazine.
