TIREE COMMUNITY BACKS WORLD CUP

Island Community Backs World Cup

With just over a month to go until Tiree hosts the UK’s first ever
PWA Wave World Cup, the community on this most beautiful of Hebridean
islands is backing the event 100%.

Having hosted a Wave Classic event for over 20 years, Tiree is used
to an annual influx of wet-suited visitors and attendant media. This
year however, elevation of the event to World Cup status and the
elongation of the competition to one week means the island’s
population will swell even more than in previous years, making the
assistance and support of the local community vitally important to
the success of this year’s event.

Commenting on this years’ extended competition, Argyll Estates
Factor, Andrew Montgomery said, ‘Argyll Estates have a long and
harmonious relationship with the annual influx of board sailors to
the island of Tiree. Tiree is a small island of 760 inhabitants, but
I am confident that the event organisers have excellent information
and environmental charters in place that are designed to minimise any
possible disruption to the everyday working lives of our farm and
croft tenants. This is a world-class event, which puts Tiree on the
world stage. I would like to wish all competitors, staff and
spectators a warm welcome to an island that is renowned for its
friendliness and hospitality’.

At the heart of this years’ Corona Extra PWA World Cup will be ‘An
Talla’, the Tiree Community Hall, which will house the Event HQ, a
state of the art Video Edit Suite, essential Broadband Hub, the event
Press Centre and World Cup Restaurant. Members of the Tiree Community
Business group (TCB) will man the event HQ for the duration of the
competition and will be on hand to answer any queries, provide
information about the island, and ensure that competitors, media and
visitors to the island are welcomed in true Tiree fashion. Carrie
MacLennan of Tiree Community Business said, ‘We are delighted to
welcome the Corona Extra World Cup event to Tiree this year, and hope
that the facilities we are providing will be of benefit, not just to
the organisers, but also everyone visiting the island for this
wonderful event.’

The event is supported again by EventScotland, Argyll & Bute Council,
HIE Argyll and the Islands and VisitScotland. The week long
competition guarantees extreme adrenaline fuelled action as some of
the World’s best wave sailors come together to brave the full
Atlantic furies of wind and waves off this remote and exposed island.

Andy Groom of event organisers, GMF Co Marketing, who is keenly
anticipating this year’s event said: ‘The conditions for windsurfing
are ideal on Tiree. We’re expecting a strong field of competitors for
what will be one of the most keenly contested Wave World Cups of
recent years. The continued support and commitment of Event Scotland,
Argyll & Bute Council, Argyll and Islands Enterprise also confirms
the events prominence in the UK sporting calendar.’
